WHIST Cultural Event
The African-themed event organised by Amy Uddin and held at WHIST - Women's Health in South Tyneside - was a day of cultural exchange.
Mukai set up an exhibition of African textiles and artefacts; a talk about African culture given by Elizabeth and an opportunity to sample her delicious, authentic African food... ; a chance to win prizes; and listen to the rhythms of 'The Bangshees' - a group of north-east women who enjoy playing the steel pans - an indirect link to Africa.
Although it was intended to be an indoors activity, The Bangshees helped drum up support for the event by playing several musical items outside the centre, and several New Hope volunteers and their friends caught the attention of passersby when they demonstrated some African dances.
The event raised £199 for New Hope.
Friends raised £43 from a sale of donated knitting wool. The above funds, combined with regular standing orders to New Hope, means that we have been able to send a Christmas shipment to Zimbabwe, with individually wrapped gifts for each child as well as some educational resources for the Parents' Support Group, and donated clothing.
