Black Cab's eccentric cabaret combines the singing of Jenny and Walter, two clearly deranged, deluded characters, with the backing of three talented, versatile musicians to create a world of quirky musical theatre - or is it theatrical music? - filled with sweet dreams and dark nightmares.
Their repertoire blends the divine decadence of Berlin cabaret, the melancholy of French chanson, the wit and satire of classic American songs, the sophistication of jazz standards, with some jewels of musical archaeology.
They bring their unique charm to the work of composers such as:
Friedrich Hollaender; Mischa Spoliansky; Kurt Weill; Joseph Kosma; Rodgers and Hart; Cole Porter; Tom Lehrer; Tom Waits and Benjamin Britten and they are constantly mining the seams of musical archaeology in the hunt for more rough diamonds.
The quality of their music survives Jenny’s obsession with extravagant dresses and power tools and Walter’s eternal pursuit of the perfect dry martini, not to mention the extremes of their bizarre love/hate relationship and their tendency to involve the audience in the proceedings, to create an entertainment which amuses, delights, titillates and terrifies.
